About Own Your Learning

Explore. Reflect. Grow.

Listening. Observing. Responding.

Own Your Learning is a student-powered, research-informed platform dedicated to curiosity, creativity, and confident learning. At its core, the project is guided by a simple principle: rather than beginning with answers, we begin with questions. We are curious about how students interact with learning today, how emerging tools like AI shape their approaches, and what educators can learn in return.

This platform is designed to bring together multiple threads of learning, research, and pedagogy in one space. It is both a portfolio and a resource hub — a place where students can explore interventions, critically engage with technology, and develop reflective learning practices, and where educators can access research insights, evidence-based teaching strategies, and examples of effective pedagogical design.

Currently in its early phases, Own Your Learning provides a glimpse of a broader vision: a living, evolving space that integrates research, teaching practice, and data analysis to benefit both learners and educators. The platform supports the creation, sharing, and reflection on learning experiences, particularly in contexts where digital and AI-enhanced tools are increasingly shaping education.

Our Approach

We are guided by curiosity and inquiry. Instead of prescriptive answers, we focus on understanding the student experience and translating these observations into actionable insights. We aim to:

  • Explore students’ perspectives: How do learners engage with new technologies, including AI, and how does this affect their approaches to critical thinking, creativity, and academic integrity?
  • Reflect through research and data: Using our teaching and data analysis expertise, we design studies and interventions that generate insights into learning practices.
  • Grow teaching and learning practice: We develop interventions and resources informed by evidence and student feedback, aimed at enhancing both student outcomes and teaching strategies.

A key example is Beyond the Bot, a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project under Own Your Learning. This initiative investigates how students interact with generative AI tools in their studies. By exploring usage patterns, ethical considerations, and learning outcomes, the project aims to guide students toward responsible, reflective, and academically sound engagement with AI. The findings also inform educators’ practices, helping them design assignments, activities, and guidance that support critical thinking and integrity in digital learning environments.

Who Benefits?

Own Your Learning serves two main audiences: students and educators.

For Students:

  • Opportunities to explore research-informed learning strategies.
  • Guidance on ethical and responsible use of AI and emerging tools.
  • Access to reflective exercises, interventions, and resources designed to improve learning outcomes.
  • Exposure to real-world data and projects, supporting development in both analytical and creative skills.

For Educators:

  • Summaries and insights from SoTL projects like Beyond the Bot.
  • Evidence-based approaches to teaching, assignment design, and student engagement.
  • Practical tools and interventions to integrate into courses and programs.
  • Inspiration from a growing community focused on thoughtful, student-centered pedagogy.

Our Vision

Our vision is a connected, student- and research-informed learning ecosystem. By combining teaching, research, and portfolio presentation, Own Your Learning seeks to:

  • Provide a space where curiosity drives exploration.
  • Encourage students and educators to critically reflect on learning experiences.
  • Promote ethical, informed, and responsible engagement with emerging technologies.
  • Showcase exemplary practice in higher education pedagogy and data-informed learning interventions.

We envision a platform that grows with its users — where students and educators alike can contribute, learn, and reflect. Over time, Own Your Learning aims to foster a collaborative environment for experimentation, discussion, and knowledge sharing that supports lifelong learning.

Who’s Behind It?

Own Your Learning is led by Dr Oladayo Folasire, bringing expertise in learning design, higher education, and digital transformation. The project is supported by a network of collaborators, educators, and students who share a commitment to thoughtful, evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. Together, we aim to create a space where research, pedagogy, and practice intersect — driving innovation in both student learning and educator development.

We welcome collaboration and expressions of interest from educators, researchers, and institutional partners who share our vision of data-aware, student-centered education. Whether your interest lies in exploring emerging technologies, designing interventions, or reflecting on teaching and learning practices, Own Your Learning provides a space to explore, reflect, and grow together.
